Wilson: For example, "Song About You" on Mike latest record is based on a really Dan Wilson-y sounding guitar riff that, in other contexts, could sound like Semisonic or a whole other thing. And I like that.īaltin: Talk about how you incorporate all the things you learn writing with different people. There are those slightly twang-y guitars, but somehow I guess I feel like if I am putting those against my basically 2019 songwriting mind and finding a commonality then I feel like I'm in a zone that's very me, that's very specifically me. Wilson: I'm so into that Americana meets pop music intersection and it can sound almost like a time capsule if you do it in a certain way. I might have recently returned from something at Sound City and just been thinking about Fleetwood Mac.īaltin: "The Rules" reminded me very much, and I mean this as a high compliment, as one of those songs where you feel a familiar vibe, but it is made so distinctly your own, you can't place it.
Maybe even Fleetwood Mac Fleetwood Mac, which was done at Sound City in Van Nuys. "The Rules" has another thing going on, and a lot of artists might say this about one or another of theirs, but "The Rules" super reminds me of Fleetwood Mac Rumours or Tusk era kind of groove. It says, "It's only an uncanny valley if you think too hard." And a lot of the lyrics are literally about being a songwriter and singer and living in the San Fernando Valley and the surrealness of it and also the sense of history that I didn't really know I would experience so strongly when I moved here. Wilson: It's funny because the last song that I put out was "Uncanny Valley" and it very directly addresses all this. And everybody sort of thought all the studios would close, but Sound City is totally back in action in Van Nuys.īaltin: Are there particular traits you can apply to a song written in the Valley? Does the Valley have its own feel? So a lot more stuff musically, it's all kind of coming over the hill.
But tons of it is here and North Hollywood. I still go to sessions for recording in Hollywood and obviously a lot of artists and my fellow producers might be more likely to be in Echo Park, Los Feliz or Silver Lake, somewhere on the east side. So do you do a lot of writing and recording in the Valley?
Baltin: I am always a very big believer in how environment affects writing and recording.
